Rain
- Stopping distances are at least double on wet roads — leave a gap of at least four seconds.
- Use dipped headlights when visibility is reduced.
- If the steering feels light in standing water (aquaplaning), ease off the accelerator and don't brake sharply.
Fog
- Use fog lights when visibility drops below about 100 metres, and switch them off when it improves.
- Slow down — you need to be able to stop in the distance you can see is clear.
Ice and snow
- Stopping distances can be up to ten times longer.
- Clear all windows and lights completely before setting off.
- Use gentle steering, braking and acceleration. Pull away in a higher gear in a manual car to reduce wheelspin.
