Manual or automatic: which should you learn?

The pros and cons of each — and why more Manchester learners are choosing automatic.

The licence difference

If you pass in an automatic, your licence only lets you drive automatic cars. If you pass in a manual, you can drive both.

Why choose automatic?

  • No clutch or gears — more brainpower for the road.
  • Easier in stop-start city traffic.
  • Electric cars are automatic, and sales of new petrol and diesel cars are being phased out in the UK.

Why choose manual?

  • Your licence covers both manual and automatic cars.
  • Useful if you might drive older or family-owned manual cars.

Does it cost more?

Not with SQ — manual and automatic lessons are the same price: £70 for a 2-hour lesson.
