How to get your provisional licence

Step 1 of every learner's journey — who can apply, what you need and when you can start lessons.

Who can apply?

You can apply for your provisional driving licence from the age of 15 years and 9 months. You can start driving a car on public roads when you turn 17 (or 16 if you receive the higher or enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment).

How to apply

  1. Apply online at GOV.UK — it's the quickest way.
  2. Have your identity document ready (for example, a UK passport), your addresses for the last 3 years and your National Insurance number if you know it.
  3. Pay the fee by card. Check GOV.UK for the current fee.
  4. Your photocard licence usually arrives within about a week if you apply online.

Watch out for copycat websites

Only apply through GOV.UK. Some websites charge extra to "help" you apply — you don't need them.

What next?

Once your licence arrives you can book your first SQ lesson and start revising for your theory test in the DriveSQ Student Portal.
