Key points
- Changing speed limits
- Big signal-controlled junctions
- Joining from side roads
- Practised with dual controls
One of south Manchester's main arteries: Princess Road runs out of the city through Moss Side and Whalley Range, then becomes the faster dual-carriageway Princess Parkway past Chorlton and Withington towards Northenden. It features on West Didsbury test routes.
Where it is
Princess Road & Princess Parkway (A5103) — Hulme and Moss Side to Northenden and the M60/M56.
What catches learners out
- Changing speed limits. The limit rises and falls along the route — check every sign and repeater, and don't assume a wide road is a fast one.
- Big signal-controlled junctions. Junctions with Barlow Moor Road and Mauldeth Road West have several lanes — read the arrows on the road early.
- Joining from side roads. Traffic is quick; wait for a real gap rather than forcing out.
How we teach it
We build up from the slower Princess Road end to the Parkway, practising lane choice at the big junctions until you can do it without being told.
