Key takeaways
- The M60 is a full orbital motorway around Manchester, linking most Greater Manchester boroughs.
- Plan your exit by junction number and destination, not just the road name.
- Join at the speed of traffic using the slip road, and give way to traffic already on the motorway.
- Leave lane 1 only to overtake, then move back when it's safe.
Why the M60 matters
The M60 circles Manchester and passes through or close to Stockport, Tameside, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Salford and Trafford. It connects with the M56, M61, M62, M66 and M67, so most Greater Manchester drivers use it sooner or later.
Joining
- Use the slip road to build up to the speed of traffic on the main carriageway.
- Check your right-hand mirror and blind spot early.
- Find a safe gap and merge — traffic already on the motorway has priority.
- Don't stop at the end of a slip road unless the traffic is stationary.
On the M60
- Drive in the left-hand lane unless overtaking.
- Keep at least a two-second gap — four in the wet.
- Watch overhead signs for lane closures and speed limits (see smart motorways).
Leaving
Countdown markers (three, two, one bars) start 300 yards before the exit. Move into lane 1 in good time, signal, and slow down on the slip road, not the main carriageway.
Learning with SQ
Motorway lessons are available to learners with us. Many Greater Manchester learners find a lesson on the M60 transforms their confidence after passing.
