Key points

  • 'Response to signals: road markings' is on the DVSA's list of the most common reasons for failing.
  • Markings are often half-worn, covered by traffic or appear late.
  • Drill: Read the road.
  • Your DriveSQ Student Portal tracks this skill lesson by lesson.

Lane arrows, box junctions, hatched areas, give-way lines and bus lanes are all painted on the road — and missing them is a regular entry on the DVSA's list.

What the examiner is looking for

Following lane markings and arrows, not stopping in yellow boxes unless allowed, not crossing solid white lines, and stopping at stop and give-way lines.

On the DVSA marking sheet, a driving fault is minor (up to 15 allowed). A serious fault is potentially dangerous, and a dangerous fault involves actual danger — one of either means you fail. The same mistake can be any of the three depending on what else was happening.

What it looks like on test

  • Following the wrong lane arrow on a roundabout approach.
  • Stopping in a yellow box junction when your exit isn't clear.
  • Driving over hatched markings with a solid border.
  • Ignoring 'KEEP CLEAR' markings.

Why it happens

Markings are often half-worn, covered by traffic or appear late. Reading the road far ahead is the fix.

How to fix it: drills we use

  1. Read the road

Look 10–15 seconds ahead and say which lane the arrows want you in.

  2. Box junction rule

Don't enter unless your exit is clear — except when turning right and only blocked by oncoming traffic.

  3. Roundabout lanes

Learn the lanes for each exit at the big roundabouts near your test centre.

Where it catches learners in Greater Manchester

Multi-lane roundabouts at Queensway near Rochdale, Peel Way near Bury and Featherstall Road near Chadderton. Our test-route guides list the exact roads.
